According to Wikipedia, Near Field Communication (NFC) is a short range high frequency wireless communication technology which enables the exchange of data between devices over a short distance. NFC communicates via magnetic field induction where two loop antennas are located within each others near field, effectively forming an air-core transformer.

Apple has now hired an expert in NFC technology as its new product manager for mobile commerce. The areas in which Apple might focus could be:

  • Mobile payment service using NFC that will enable consumers pay directly from their bank account or using credit store in iTunes account
  • ‘iPay, iBuy and iCoupons’ patents, describing a comprehensive mobile payments, mobile commerce and mobile marketing business based around an NFC-enabled iPhone
  • Automated security checking process where users of the iTravel app could process themselves through the security clearance system and check themselves in at the boarding gate.  This must be in line with the recent tests conducted by Continent for self-boarding. But here the passengers swipe their boarding passes themselves. As of last year over 14 airlines were using self boarding.
  • A much required a Grab and Go application to enable easy transfer of files between Mac, iPhone and Apple TV.

With the number of patent filings and the recent recruit of Vigier by Apple, it looks like it is making all the efforts to transform the concepts to commercial reality.
